Monasticism began in Egypt, and the White Monastery is one of its greatest monuments. In 2000, a consortium was formed to study and conserve this and neighboring remains. Two faculty members at the University of Minnesota belong to this consortium. Our contribution is to study the relationship between the monastery and the world around it, using both written texts and physical remains as our evidence.
