Minnesota in Egypt

Several faculty members at the University of Minnesota work on aspects of Late Antique Egypt from papyri to potsherds. A subject of interest to two of us is monasticism, and so we organized a symposium entitled:

LIVING FOR ETERNITY:

THE WHITE MONASTERY AND ITS NEIGHBORHOOD

June 2009: We are updating this website 1. to present some of the results of the symposium, 2. to draw attention to the great strides others have made in studying these sites since 2003, 3. to sdd references to additional Minnesotan projects on related material.

Monasticism began in Egypt, and the White Monastery is one of its greatest monuments. In 2000, a consortium began planning to study and conserve this and neighboring remains.

This website serves to provide information about

  • some later progress on those subjects
  • other Minnesota projects on related material.
  • some general background to Early Christianity in Egypt

For the contents of the site, present and planned, see site map.
